Welcome to Hawthorn & Hazel! I’m so glad you’re here. Homeschooling is an exciting journey, yet with so many options for curriculum, it can be difficult to know what to choose and where to start.
If you’re looking for Christian-based teaching materials that nurture the development of your child’s mind, heart, and body, you’re at the right place.
Many education programs for young children utilize online learning, apps, worksheets, or formal work that starts too early and disrupts childhood. These programs fail to take into account what is happening developmentally in the inner world of the child.
Hawthorn & Hazel supports whole-child education, which is inspired by Waldorf, a little-known art of teaching that seeks to meet children where they are mentally, emotionally, and physically.
This is different from current educational norms which generally seek, as early as possible, to put as much knowledge as they can into young children. The purpose of the push for good grades and a good career is to train the intellect to feed into the competitive nature of the economy.
In contrast, the purpose of Waldorf education is to teach children what it means to be human and to help them learn who they are, what their natural gifts are, and how they can care for other human beings and contribute to the betterment of society.
Our approach to homeschooling includes:
- Christian foundation
- Play-based early childhood with plenty of movement and imagination
- Formal academics starting in first grade
- Handwork, music, painting, and drawing to balance the intellect with the heart
- Seasonal rhythms that guide the year
